AI Social Media Manager vs Agency: UK Cost & Scope
Should you use AI social media software or hire an agency? The answer depends on whether you want tools that help you do the work or people contracted to do agreed work for you.
Written by SociGen, not an independent review. Features and plan terms can change; check the official sources below.
The short answer
SociGen can help an owner create and schedule content. An agency may be a better fit when you need outsourced strategy, original production or someone accountable for day-to-day delivery. Software and a managed service are not equivalent purchases.
When Social media agency fits
Choose an agency when you need a named person or team to own agreed deliverables, produce original material or manage a broader campaign. Confirm the scope in the contract.
When SociGen fits
Choose SociGen when you can provide business context and photos, review AI output and oversee Facebook/Instagram marketing yourself.

ILLUSTRATION, NOT AN AGENCY QUOTE
A £600/month agency budget vs SociGen Core
This example compares subscription and retainer payments only. It excludes your time, human services, optional add-ons, extra media credits, ad spend and any applicable taxes. The deliverables are not equivalent.
- Illustrative agency · 12 months
- £7,200
- Core early-adopter · 12 months
- £1,188
- Core standard · 12 months
- £2,988
£600 × 12; scope must be quoted
£99 × 12; software only
£249 × 12; software only
The arithmetic difference is £6,012/year at the early-adopter price or £4,212/year at the standard price. These are payment differences, not guaranteed savings for equivalent work. Early-adopter eligibility and the 12-month price guarantee apply.
What the AI does—and what stays with you
SociGen helps with post ideas, captions, media, branded creative, previews and scheduling. Business context and brand voice give the AI a starting point, reducing the need to build every post from a blank page.
You still need to check dates, prices, claims, tone, image suitability and permissions. You also need to keep your connected accounts working and review results. “Backed by a marketing team” describes SociGen’s AI-assisted workspace, not an included team of people delivering agency services.
When paying an agency makes sense
If you have no capacity to review or run marketing, software alone may not solve the problem. A suitable agency can take ownership of agreed work and bring human judgement, production and specialist experience.
Ask for a written scope: networks, posts, creative production, revisions, reporting, community replies, ad spend and VAT. Ask who supplies photos and who approves claims. Do not assume any of these are included just because the quote is monthly.
A hybrid approach can work
You can use SociGen to prepare routine posts and organise content while a freelancer or agency handles strategy, photography or campaign reviews. Any human services remain a separate cost.
Compare a realistic month of your work: what you would do yourself, what software assists with and what a provider would deliver. A lower subscription price is not evidence that the service scope is the same.
